Can I make metal clay myself?
There is one producer of mix-it-yourself metal clay powder that I’m aware of at this time. Silver Smiths' Precious Metal Art Clay Powder has produced an interesting video on
You Tube, but I have no personal experience with this product. Although the raw materials may be cheaper if you mix it yourself, it is probably not worth the time, effort and learning curve when two professionally manufactured; perfectly blended and tested products are readily available.

What forms does it come in?
PMC is available in Standard, PMC+ and PMC3 lump clay; PMC+ and PMC3 slip/paste; PMC+ and PMC3 ready filled syringes and PMC+ sheet/paper.  ACS has a wider variety of products in their line including two clay types - regular and slow dry; slip/paste; syringe; sheet/paper, Oil Paste and an Overlay Paste designed to use with ceramics. Both companies offer 22k gold lump clay as well.

How does metal clay affect the environment?
Mitsubishi Materials developed Precious Metal Clay with highly refined gold particles used in the manufacture of computer chips. Aida promotes the “green” aspect of Art Clay Silver which is made using silver nitrate recycled from photo negatives and film stock. Both products are equally “environmentally friendly”.

Is metal clay toxic?

Although we certainly don’t advocate ingesting metal clay (after all it doesn’t taste as good as Play-Doh), both versions are completely non toxic. Precautions should be taken when sanding and firing all metal clays. Inhaling metal dust may cause slight respiratory problems in people with sensitive lungs. Never blow dust away, simply use a dry brush as you refine your work or when gathering it together to work back into a lump of fresh clay. Proper ventilation should be used during the burnout period when firing. It’s never a good idea to breathe fumes for any length of time, including those produced by a steak on an outdoor bar-b-que, however a short exposure shouldn’t be a problem. Firing outside on a still day, in the house by a window with a fan or right on your stove top with the hood vent on will help to disburse excess smoke and fumes.
