Artist's Statement

Almost every aspect of history enthralls me. Architecture; anthropology; archeology; fashion; fine art; literature and music have all made their way into my personal expression from the medieval madrigals I sang in my teens and twenties to the painted tapestry pillows that obsessed me in my thirties to the historical novels that have always captured my imagination. While I am captivated by panorama, my eye is drawn to nuance. The drape of fabric, the joint where two planes meet, the turn of a phrase. The excitement for me begins with the investigation of these details and continues as I discover my own narrative. My jewelry draws inspiration from this passion, uniting classic design themes with modern sensibilities.

During my previous incarnation as a make up artist for the entertainment industry, my hands were my primary tools. Powder brushes and creamy colors the means to a creative end. Making jewelry using metal clay feels intuitive as my fingertips shape and mold the malleable fine silver, brushes finesse it’s form and rich patinas add a finishing touch to my focal pieces. Each time I sit at the bench surrounded by the tools of my trade I feel as though I’m traveling through time, while being firmly rooted to the current millennium. My work is a commitment I’ve made to follow precedents set by jewelry artists who have come before and explore new technologies and methods of manufacture. I strive to create designs that draw the viewer in to a world that is at once familiar and exotic. I delight in fabricating unique jewels that are intensely personal and evolve into a cherished artifact.
